About the DSV

The purpose of the Society is primarily to promote the well being of Donkeys in Australia be they wild or domesticated, by:

  1. 1. Encouraging the breeding of sound quality donkeys. To do this the Society shall, in association with the other affiliates of the Affiliated Donkey of Australia, maintain a Stud Book for the registration of stock.

  2. 2. Providing education on the care of donkeys.

  3. 3. Promoting research into all matters relating to donkeys, their health and general care.

  4. 4. Encouraging and supporting the exhibition of donkeys.

  5. 5. Participating in the prevention of cruelty to donkeys and co-operating with any other organisation actively engaged in preventing cruelty.

  6. 6. Promoting the public image of the donkey as a useful animal as well as an engaging pet.

Field days are held to help new owners learn about their donkeys, plus more advanced training days and other sessions of interest. Members are able to socialise with other members at functions held during the year.

Brayings, the Society Newsletter is sent out every two months to keep members in touch with the Victorian "donkey world". Our members also receive Donkey Digest which is the National Magazine of the Affiliated Donkey Societies of Australia. It is circulated 4 times per year and provides information of general interest.

Members of the Society range from people who enjoy involvement in many of the activities to others who are mostly interested in the newsletters and information - in fact, some don't even own a donkey! So the only criteria for membership is to be a "donkey lover"!

Officers of the Society

The Donkey Society of Victoria (DSV) was formed in 1972 by a small group of donkey enthusiasts. The DSV is a member of The Affiliated Donkey Societies of Australia. On a national scale, records are maintained of the parentage of each donkey registered so a pedigree of five or six generations is on record for many of the donkeys being born now.
