Donkeys in need of help
The welfare of donkeys in Victoria has been one of the main aims of the Donkey Society of Victoria from its inception in 1972.
Donkey welfare had a dramatic beginning with the rescue of hundreds of donkeys that were transported to the southern states from the Northern Territory and eastern Australia in the 1970’s and 80’s for use as pets and pet food -- with horrific consequences due to the different climatic conditions and abuse. Donkeys were transported in crowded trucks and not rested during the long journey. Many died, or aborted, foals were separated from their mothers, many were injured and had medical complications from the extreme conditions and stress.
Then there was the era of a huge increase in the population of donkeys, so we needed to educate the owners in the responsible care and training of these animals. The society runs information days covering the care and basic training of donkeys. These are held in various areas around Victoria and interested members of the public are invited.
We continue to be aware of the needs of donkeys in our community with area representatives, members, welfare agencies, local councils and the general public all playing a part in identifying donkeys in need. Often they are unwanted but are healthy and just need a new home, which we can find. Donkeys are sometimes found abandoned and have chronic feet and skin conditions, may be lame, sick, old and debilitated.
The Society will rescue, seek veterinary advice if necessary, treat or do what is recommended for the donkey. We will hopefully rehabilitate and arrange for re-homing, or if there is a situation where a donkey’s condition is unsuitable because of an ongoing problem we may ask for assistance from the Donkey Shelter.
Most donkeys that are brought to our attention are neglected mainly due to the owner’s ignorance as to caring for their animal. We will offer assistance and advice and form a working relationship with the owner so they have ongoing support.
When a donkey in our care is re-homed after rehabilitation we will charge a nominal amount to assist with travel and out of pocket costs for the people involved and, in some cases, the owners are happy for any funds for the re-sale to go towards the society’s welfare fund to enable other donkeys to be helped.
After re-homing donkeys we continue to monitor the animal, offer help and will always take the donkey back if the new owner’s circumstances change.
